Youth Football to Get Its Own Day at Ford Field
Detroit Lions Will Host the Think Detroit PAL Youth Championships

November 9, 2009 (Detroit, MI) –More than 700 youths will hit the gridiron Saturday, November 14 when the Detroit Lions will sponsor Think Detroit PAL’s 2009 youth football championship games at Ford Field, 2000 Brush Street in downtown Detroit.

Doors will open to the public at 8 a.m. and the first of four games will begin at 9.

“We are extremely pleased that the Detroit Lions and Ford Field are a part of this event again,” said Lawrence C. Hemingway, COO of Think Detroit PAL.  “They are giving our kids the opportunity to showcase their skills and talents in a world class facility where some of the best athletes in the world have participated, and for that we are extremely grateful.  This is an extraordinary opportunity.”

The day promises to be an exciting one, filled with football action, dancing and cheering for team favorites. The event will conclude with an awards ceremony honoring participants, the most valuable player and the coach of the year.

“The Lions are honored to be a partner with Think Detroit PAL,” noted Tim Pendell, senior director of community affairs for the Detroit Lions.  “All it takes is to spend a few minutes at any of Think Detroit PAL’s events to know that this outstanding organization is providing invaluable support, guidance and instruction to the children in our community.”

The 9 a.m. game matches teams of players ages 7-8.  Players ages 9-10 will compete starting at 12:30, ages 11-12 at 3 p.m. and ages 13-14 at 5:25.

Cheerleaders get into the action with a Mascot Unity Dance at noon and the Unity Cheer at 2:40 p.m.

The fun-filled day of activities under the covered dome of the Lions’ home field is expected to draw thousands of excited fans and over 1,000 participants and volunteer coaches.

Tickets are $5 at the door ($2 for children 14 and younger).  Adult tickets are $4 in advance at the Think Detroit PAL office at 111 W. Willis in Detroit.

Think Detroit PAL is one of the nation’s largest nonprofit urban youth leadership organizations, offering 11 sports programs, leadership camps and academic help.  The organization serves 13,000 youths annually with the help of 1,500 volunteer coaches.
