Press Release
THINK DETROIT PAL OFFERS GREAT PROGAMMING OPTIONS ALL YEAR ROUND
Diamond sports are starting, but the summer season doesn’t stop there!
Detroit, Mich.—The school year may be drawing to a close, but the height of programming season is just ramping up for Think Detroit PAL! The nonprofit, which has serviced the girls and boys in the city of Detroit for over 40 years, is primarily known for its football and cheer programming. And that’s understandable - in 2010, more than 4,000 children participated in 24 different clubs for tackle football and cheer.
But those 4,000 girls and boys are only a fraction of the over 10,000 children Think Detroit PAL services each year, with a 24 combined sports and academic programs. Baseball and Softball kicks off on June 4th at Maheras-Gentry Park on the city’s East side, but swinging a bat is just two of the many activities Think Detroit PAL has lined up for the hot summer months.
April through August, the city’s children can enjoy Soccer at Historic Fort Wayne, run Outdoor Track at Central High School, learn how to swing a club in Golf or attend Lacrosse camp. For information on pricing and registration, call 313-833-1600. It’s not even too late to play this summer – Golf and Lacrosse are still taking registrations!
Think Detroit PAL’s summer programming is more than just giving children something to do between the months of June and September. The nonprofit’s 1,500 volunteer coaches all complete a three-level IMPACT coach’s training curriculum, which teaches them how to build character in young people and be effective mentors. In learning how to pitch or kick a soccer ball, girls and boys might not even realize that they’re learning respect, responsibility, discipline, diversity, teamwork and leadership – but those are just as much a part of the Think Detroit PAL experience as home runs and relays.
It’s already June. Don’t wait to sign up!
Think Detroit PAL was formed in 2006 with the merger of Think Detroit Inc. and the Detroit Police Athletic League. In partnership with the Detroit Police Department and community volunteers, Think Detroit PAL builds character in young people through athletic, academic and leadership development programs. In 2010, Think Detroit PAL served over 10,000 girls and boys through a combined 24 sports and academic programs, making it one of the largest youth organizations in the state of Michigan. More than 80 cents of each dollar donated to Think Detroit PAL goes directly into programming.
