Dan Varner- Chief Executive Officer
 
 

Dan VarnerDan Varner is a graduate of the University of Michigan and the University of Michigan Law School.  As a practicing attorney, he clerked for Justice Alan Page of the Minnesota Supreme Court, and then returned to Detroit.  He left the practice of law in 1999 to work full-time on his youth development activities.

Dan has received numerous awards for his public service, including the 2003 Social Entrepreneurship Award from the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research, the Jane L. Mixer Award for Contributions to Social Justice from the University of Michigan Law School, the Golden Apple Award from The Roeper School, the Mary McLeod Bethune Opal Service Award from the National Council of Negro Women, and the Community Service Award from the Ford African Ancestry Network.
   
 

Lawrence C. "Hap" Hemingway- Chief Operating Officer

 

Lawrence C. "Hap" HemingwayLawrence C. “Hap” Hemingway is the Chief Operating Officer of Think Detroit PAL.  Lawrence is a graduate of Wayne State University where he majored in education and played football at linebacker and fullback.  After college, Lawrence worked for Covert and Kalamazoo public schools as a middle school teacher, football coach and athletic director.  He then moved on to the City of Detroit Recreation Department where he served as general manager, deputy director and director.  In 2008, he took his current position with Think Detroit PAL.

Lawrence is married to Felicia and has two children, Lawrence (11) and Laurielle (10).  He his currently working on his Master’s in recreation, sports and tourism at the University of Illinois.
